Sending text messages from your email inbox

A pretty handy trick to send those addicting text messages without having to whip out your phone or PDA, is to simply send the text message as an email to your recipient of choice. Just use the following addresses in the "To:" box.

  • <10 digit number>@vtext.com   (for Verizon Wireless customers)
  • <10 digit number>@txt.att.net    (for AT&T / Cingular customers)
  • <10 digit number>@messaging.sprintpcs.com  (for Sprint customers)

An added benefit is that if the recipient replies to your text message from their phone, you will get an email of that text message response. Wicked!

Useful Tips

  1. Delete your email signature
Since text messages must be 160 characters or less (including spaces), your signature could easily gobble up that much space and result in a text message that gets cut off or just makes no sense to the reader

  2. Be as brief as possible
You must be as brief and concise as possible; which is hard to do when you have a comfortable full-size keyboard infront of you. Again, only 160 characters are allowed!

  3. Type in TxtSpk (text speak)
You know what that means; type like a 14 year old kid on MySpace ... shorten words to their simplest form: "You" becomes "u" , "okay" becomes "k" , "are" becomes "r" ... you get the point.
(this is a good habit to get into when your texting from your phone as well)

NOTE: Check your wireless account information for details on charges and fees. You may be charged depending on your account plan. We are not responsible for any charges that you may incur.

Thanks, Marc—this is helpful to someone who lives on email, but never texts (unlike my sons!). Keep up the good words.
